Adventures in 3D printing (new printer)

The last 48 hours have been a blur. Monday evening the Bambu Labs X1 Carbon arrived link and I immediately got it printing. It also wasn’t long before I clogged the nozzle and jammed the extruder.

Yep that is right, I got a brand new printer and in the first 6 hours I had to dissassemble most of it to get out a jam. I relied on mostly YouTube videos and help forums which were helpful, but glossed over key details. To say it was an annoying process was an understatement, but as a result I know a ton about this printer and how it works.

Moving on the next 42 hours were filled with test prints in both PLA and then PETG. The PLA was supplied by Bambu and gave a control to my tests to know that for sure the machine worked. Yes, I printed the SS Benchy #3DBenchy because that is my favorite first print to test things out. Well the Benchy worked out great, but the Prusament PETG proved to be problematic. Reading Reddit and Bambu’s own forum I found examples where people said this or that setting worked great, but results were not promising. Which led me to my own tests to which I had the following results;

  • 13 prints

  • 2 control Benchys

  • 6 failed to print successfully

  • 5 dialing in settings once I got a print to make it all the way to the end

  • 1 very successful multi-color print

I can say that I have learned a lot with this experience and while at first I doubted myself for buying the X1 Carbon… I am warming up to it now. Well on to repeating the last print a dozen times to build up inventory before moving on to the next.
